Our Mission
Science Without Borders® is the overarching theme of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. Its purposes are to provide financial sponsorship of marine conservation programs and scientific research, and to promote public awareness of the need to preserve, protect and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources.
The founder, His Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin Sultan of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, understands the magnitude of the challenge to conserve the magnificent life that resides in our world’s common oceans. At one-fifth the size of the United States, Saudi Arabia is flanked by the Red Sea on one side and the Arabian Gulf on the other resulting in a coastline 2,640 km long within reach of some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world.
America’s coastline is nearly 20,000 km long and the ocean territory in our exclusive economic zone is over 3.4 million square nautical miles – larger than the combined land area of all fifty states! It is apparent that planet Earth should truly be renamed planet Ocean.
Prince Khaled recognized that America has the capability to set the example in stewardship of our oceans and he has reached out to us by establishing the Living Oceans Foundation in the U.S. We have formed partnerships with scientists and conservationists around the world to leverage resources, commitment, and ideas necessary to make substantial progress in the grand challenge inherent in our mission.
This isn’t a job for one nation – the magnitude of it transcends all borders! Although “Science Without Borders®” is the vision of one great man, it will require the support of all people who inhabit our misnamed planet to make this dream a reality!
